A Western Party Can Be A Blast – Plan Yours Today

Hosting A Western Party Can Be An Ideal, Fun Get Together With Family And Friends. There are many different themes from which to choose:   a classic hoedown, simple BBQ, or an upscale denim and diamonds affair are all excellent choices for your party.

Get your guests in the mood early to go country at your western themed party by sending authentic invitations.  You can include suggestions for your guests to wear including authentic apparel such as hats, boots and bandanas!  Whether you make your own invitations using traditional red and white checkerboard paper, or purchase invitations with a denim-like appearance, your guests will get excited upon receiving your invitation to participate in your old west cowboy theme.  Upbeat  country and western music,  favors,  and  food will entertain your guests.  Keep the  party going once the sun goes down,  by accessorizing your decorations with some country western influenced lights.  Party string lights come in various western oriented shapes such as chili peppers, cacti,  cowboy hats, or boots.

If you are planning a more upscale event such as a denim and diamonds party, the sky is your limit!  Plenty of bling is a must-have  and the more glitzy the better.  Think ideas reminiscent of “Dallas” for your inspiration! Big hair and glitzy decorations are the way to go.  County elegance will be your motto and you can incorporate that theme into every aspect of your western party.  Try using country elements with a classy twist..like western themed candle lit luminaries to light the way to your front door.  Inexpensive galvanized watering cans can hold elegant arrays of wild flowers or roses to serve as your centerpieces.  Activities can include making western themed items that can be bedazzled (that awesome little tool you can use to add some dazzling effects to your shirt, hat, belt or scarf!).  Provide some simple western scarves, belts or even cell phone covers for your guests.  Get  some simple western themed templates and watch the competition  heat up fast for the fanciest creation.

Move the party indoors with a showing of some classic western movies.  John Wayne’s, “True Grit” or Clint Eastwood’s,  “The Outlaw Josie Wales” or  “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” are movie classics that are always a hit.  You can even get a life-size,  stand-up poster of John Wayne to greet your guest when they arrive!

John Wayne movies are must have for any indoor get together. You can have your guests watch the movie and then ask trivia questions based upon the movie.   John Wayne made over 200 movies in his career but here are my personal Top 10 favorites:  El Dorado, True Grit, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Sands of Iwo Jima, Big Jake,  Rio Bravo,  McClintock, The Quiet Man, and don’t forget, The Searchers.

You will need to plan some party games, particularly if there are some younger guests on your invitee list.  Pin the tail on the donkey, classic horseshoes or  hit the tin can target (water pistols  are perfect if party is outdoors) can be fun for guests of all ages.    Prizes may be awarded to the winners of each game and the prizes can be western themed as well. Consider the following ideas for prizes:  Cowboy hats and water guns are always a hit with the younger  winners.  For the adult crowd,  Country music CDs from popular artists such as Kenny Chesney or Toby Keith,  an ensemble of BBQ cooking sauces and spices,  a country themed cookbook like “The Pioneer Woman Cooks” by Ree Drumond , or a simple horseshoe to hang (open side up of course to hold the good luck in!) is  a nice touch.

Remember when line dancing was such a popular western party activity? Who can sit still to a foot stomping  song like “Boot Scoot Boogie”!  Whether you hire a professional DJ for your party or are more of a do-it-yourself kind of host, clear some space and let your guests dance! Lead a line dance to some of your favorite,  up-beat country and western tunes.  Achy Breaky Heart,  Devil Went Down to Georgia, or Don’t Rock the Jukebox are great selections.  Throw in the Electric Slide just for fun to get your party rockin’!

You’ve got great party decorations, awesome music, and fun games. Now you just need some delicious western food!  Your menu can be as easy or complex as you’d like.  You can tempt your guests with simple cowboy food like delicious fried chicken strips, corn cob shaped corn bread muffins, baked bean casserole with bacon and fall off the bone tender smoked barbeque baby back ribs.  If you are planning a more elegant affair with a country twist, serving angus beef tenderloin wrapped with bacon, gourmet twice baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, or your best gourmet hamburgers with cheddar cheese and red onion will be real crowd pleasers!  An easy fish selection like BBQ grilled salmon is an excellent and healthy choice for those non-carnivores on the guest list for your adult western theme party.   Country western drinks can be a fun addition to your party.  For a pretty pink delight for the ladies on your guest list, try a Western Sling.  2oz Gin, ½ oz cherry brandy, 1oz lemon juice, 3 oz. pineapple juice,  2/3 oz simple sugar syrup and 1 tsp Grenadine. Need a more manly beverage – try some specialty beers like Samuel Adams, Bud Lime or LandShark for the gents.  Need a tasty non-alcoholic beverage? Try an Arnold Palmer – Equal parts of Lemonade and Iced Tea! It just doesn’t get easier or more country than that!
